They may also hope that they can give you a false HPI report instead of you doing your own. These HPI reports will have been printed off their own computer and will show that the car has no finance outstanding on it. So you must at all times obtain your own HPI / Car Data Check report. Remember you will not receive the cars VIN on any car data report from any major suppliers. So you will have to check that the VIN number matches that on the V5 and that both are genuine. If you have any doubts about how valid they are, walk away.

So if a trader gives you what they purport to be a clear HPI check which has been run off their own computer, and then you run your own which shows up a Finance agreement, have they committed fraud?
Is it possible for a 'real' HPI report to not show an outstanding finance agreement? I gather HPI are rather proud of their system.
