- The date of expiry of the current tax disc or SORN declaration.
- Its rate of vehicle excise duty.
The database is constantly updated although it is possible that an outstanding vehicle tax application may still be processing and so the vehicle record may not be completely up to date.

How do they get this information?
One of the keys to the success of the vehicle check process is the existence of the vehicle identity check (VIC) system, a scheme designed to help stop stolen cars being passed off as repaired accident damaged cars. This involves insurers notifying the DVLA of any cars that are written off setting a VIC marker against its vehicle record. While this marker is in place the DVLA won't issue a registration certificate or vehicle license reminder. This will only be removed after the vehicle passes a VIC.
A vehicle's identity can be checked by the Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) which can confirm a car's identity and ensure the genuine car is returned to the road.
It takes around 20 minutes with the car needing to be roadworthy, requiring a valid MOT, and with the person driving the car fully insured.
However, while the DVLA check can provide important peace of mind it can be worth paying a little extra to a vehicle check company for a more thorough report.

A thorough vehicle check company will take information on the registration of vehicles from the DVLA and add this to additional details from the police, finance and insurance companies to provide a thorough report into the background of a vehicle.

- Whether it is subject to any outstanding finance.
If you buy a car that has outstanding finance, then you are NOT the legal owner. The third party has legal title to it and will demand its
return. They will either repossess the vehicle or you may negotiate a settlement which could realistically mean you end up paying almost
twice the original price. If you look at a V5 (Vehicle Registration Document) you will see the wording 'The registered keeper is not

- A mileage check that includes comparing the current mileage of the vehicle to its mileage at various points in its lifetime.

- View the V5: Insist on viewing the V5 registration document which shows the vehicle's registered keeper. Remember, the registered
keeper is not necessarily the owner of the vehicle!
